UPPER THIRD MOLAR

The upper third molar, often referred to as the “wisdom tooth,” is the last tooth located at the back of the upper jaw. It is one of the four third molars in a human mouth, with one in each quadrant: upper left, upper right, lower left, and lower right. These teeth typically emerge between the ages of 17 and 25, although some individuals may experience eruption earlier or later in life, or not at all. One of the most common problems is impaction, where the tooth is unable to fully emerge from the gums due to lack of space or improper alignment. When a third molar is impacted, it may remain partially or fully buried beneath the gumline, causing discomfort, infection, and potential damage to neighboring teeth. Additionally, partially erupted wisdom teeth are more difficult to clean, making them more prone to cavities and gum disease.

Some people may have enough space in their mouths for the teeth to emerge fully and function normally without causing problems. In these cases, the upper third molar can serve a role in helping to chew and break down food.
